Do you eat pizza at least once a week? Have you tried Hawaiian pizza – and loved it? Are you a self-proclaimed pizza aficionado or a pizzaiola? (Which – ICYMI – is the Italian word for a pizza maker!

Check out these random pizza facts that only diehard pie lovers would know.

Pizza was invented in Naples, Italy.

When we think of pizza, we think of Italy. And when we think of Italy, we think of pizza. So, even if you didn’t know the exact city it was invented in, you probably knew that it was somewhere in Italy…right?

There are 8 different types of pizzas.

They include Neapolitan, Chicago Deep-Dish, New York-style, Sicilian, Greek, California, Detroit-style, and St. Louis pizza. No matter what your fave is, can’t we all agree that all pizza is delicious?

There are three shapes associated with pizza.

The pizza pie itself is circular, the box is square, and the slices are triangles. Is your mind blown? The reason for each of the shapes is actually simple and makes a lot of sense.

Pizza is round because the dough cooks most evenly in a circle – and it also makes it easy to divide up, which is why it’s cut into triangle slices! It’s put into a square box because it can be made using a single sheet of cardboard. Not to mention that cardboard is a smart choice for the environment.

Pizza boxes are recyclable.

They’re delivered hot, fresh, and in a cardboard box – and cardboard comes from a natural and renewable resource – which means they’re recyclable.

However, even though pizza boxes belong in the recycling bin in most places, there are some areas that still don’t take them yet. So, before you recycle your pizza box, be sure to check out your local guidelines and see if your college town allows it. If it does, then simply brush out the crumbs, fully empty it, and flatten the box, and it’s ready to be recycled! If you can’t recycle your pizza box in your area yet, you can compost it.

National Pizza Month is in October.

Halloween is one of the most popular days to order pizza, so maybe that’s why National Pizza Month is in October. Or maybe it’s because there are 31 days in the month – meaning there are more days in the month to celebrate. (And by celebrate, I mean eat pizza). This October, you should throw a pizza party and share all of these fun facts with your besties!

Pizza boxes can be used as a plate.

In addition to being easy for people to deliver and keep the pizza hot, pizza boxes can also be used as a plate! If you’re the only one eating the pizza then of course it can be used as one giant plate. But if you’re sharing it, you can rip off the lid, fold it into quarters, and tear at the creases to produce four disposable (and recyclable!) plates.

People like to fold their pizza – edge of the crust to edge of the crust – to eat it.

Some other ways people like to eat their pies include backward (meaning crust first which, TBH, is just wrong), eating their toppings separately, sending it straight into their mouth without doing anything fancy, and using a knife and fork – which is the best way to eat it when it’s hot and you’re hungry! How do you like to eat yours?

Foccacia Bread is most similar to pizza dough.

We get it – sometimes you’re craving pizza but don’t have the dough to get the dough. So the next time you’re in the mood for your fave round food, check your refrigerator and see what kind of bread you have for a makeshift pizza! Sauce and cheese is delicious on pretty much anything – from bagels to baguettes, to garlic bread.

But, if you want to get your homemade pizza as close to the real thing, we recommend focaccia bread which has a similar chew and fluffy texture as pizza crust.
